The Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance, comprised of Chinese companies, has announced the official release of the video interface "GPMI." GPMI is compatible with USB Type-C and USB Type-B.
GPMI Type-B specifications are 192Gbps bandwidth/480W power supply with greatly superior performance for HDMI and DisplayPort while Type-C spec is 96Gbps bandwidth/240W power supply at HDMI 2.2 level.
GPMI bandwidth is bidirectional and can also transfer data. By using GPMI, it would also receive network data without needing any other connection.
At present, the GPMI Type-C interface has been approved and authorized by the USB Association, so the GPMI Type-C interface can be compatible with the USB Type-C ecosystem, and more than 50 Chinese-funded companies such as Huawei, Skyworth, Hisense, and TCL have confirmed 1, and the GPMI interface will be added to smart TV products in the future.
Application scenarios and market value
Simplified connection: GPMI integrates the quadruple functions of audio and video + data + control + power supply through a single interface, reducing the number of cables and supporting 8K ultra-high-definition video transmission.
Through the daisy chain networking technology, the "one-line series" of multiple devices is realized, which reduces the installation cost of multiple devices (speakers, game consoles, etc.)
and outdoor splicing screens in the family, and at the same time achieves low latency + high image quality.
Two-way interaction: screen control + ecological double expansion GPMI supports the two-way control protocol, which can realize cross-device reverse control through TV, realize TV remote control, third-party controller, control mobile games and other applications, and "translate" the mobile phone ecology to the large screen.
Progress in the industrial chain
The GPMI ecosystem covers the upstream, midstream and downstream of the audio and video industry chain in an all-round way, and works with more than 50 core industry partners to jointly drive the innovation, development and standardization of the entire audio and video industry chain.
In the current first stage, GPMI technology simplifies the connection of home devices, optimizes the user experience, promotes the development of smart TVs and multi-screen interaction and other scenarios through unified interfaces and high-quality transmission performance, and provides technical support for home entertainment and smart life.
In the second stage, GPMI technology empowers the automotive electronics industry, realizes the unification of equipment interfaces and efficient data transmission, and supports multi-terminal collaboration of splicing screens, which is widely used in intelligent driving, intelligent transportation and other fields to improve industry efficiency and user service experience.
In the third stage, GPMI technology supports the intelligent upgrading of scenarios such as intelligent manufacturing, intelligent logistics, new energy and environmental governance in pan-industrial applications. Through efficient data transmission and equipment collaboration, we can promote industrial automation and green and sustainable development, and fully cover the needs of industrial intelligent transformation.
GPMI is a standard that has been developed since 2019 by Shenzhen Guo际 8K Ultra High Qing 駆䢧业协作联盟, a group of more than 50 Chinese companies. It can transmit video, audio, data, control signals, etc. over a single cable, with a maximum transmission speed of 192 Gbps and supports up to 8K video and 480W power supply.
GPMI also implements an alternative to HDCP with ADCP content protection protocol based on SM3 and SM4 “national security algorithms” and much faster than HDMI (200ms vs 2s).
Benefits of OpenHarmony-based Oniro powered computers and phones adopting GPMI
Adopting GPMI (a Chinese-developed HDMI alternative) in OpenHarmony-based Oniro powered computers and phones could offer several benefits, particularly in enhancing interoperability and reducing fragmentation across diverse hardware platforms. Here are some potential advantages:
Enhanced Interoperability: OpenHarmony and Oniro are designed to be compatible with a wide range of devices, from smartphones to IoT devices. Adopting GPMI could further enhance this interoperability by providing a standardized interface for high-definition multimedia transmission, similar to HDMI but potentially with more control and customization options tailored to the OpenHarmony ecosystem.
Reduced Fragmentation: By adopting a unified standard like GPMI, OpenHarmony-based systems can reduce the fragmentation that often occurs with diverse hardware and software ecosystems. This can make it easier for developers to create applications that work seamlessly across different devices and platforms.
Improved Compatibility: GPMI could offer improved compatibility with other Chinese-developed technologies and standards, which may be increasingly important as OpenHarmony and Oniro expand their global reach. This could also facilitate better integration with Huawei's HarmonyOS, which shares a similar technological foundation.
Support for Advanced Features: GPMI might support advanced features such as higher resolution displays, faster data transfer rates, and improved audio-visual synchronization, which could be beneficial for multimedia applications on OpenHarmony-based devices.
Open-Source Ecosystem: Both OpenHarmony and Oniro emphasize open-source development. Adopting GPMI could align with this philosophy, providing an open standard that can be freely implemented and improved upon by the developer community.
Global Standardization: As OpenHarmony and Oniro aim to create a global ecosystem for smart devices, adopting GPMI could help in establishing a new global standard for multimedia interfaces, potentially influencing other markets beyond China.
Overall, the adoption of GPMI could strengthen the OpenHarmony and Oniro ecosystems by providing a robust, standardized interface for multimedia transmission, enhancing compatibility and interoperability across a wide range of devices.
